SUMMARY:Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra's Season Finale Concert: Springtime in Vienna
DESCRIPTION:Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra Concludes 49th Season with "Springtime in Vienna" on May 2 The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra (KSO) closes its 49th season with Springtime in Vienna\, an evening of elegant and powerful Austrian music. The concert takes place Saturday\, May 2\, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. at the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the NIU Music Building. A free pre-concert talk will be held at 6:30 p.m. Under the direction of KSO Music Director Linc Smelser\, the program features two iconic works. The concert opens with The Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss Jr.\, a beloved symbol of Viennese charm known for its graceful melodies and enduring popularity. The centerpiece is Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp Minor by Gustav Mahler\, performed for the first time by the KSO. This sweeping symphony moves from a somber opening to a triumphant finale and includes the famous Adagietto\, one of the most moving passages in orchestral music. The evening will also include the announcement of the KSO High School Musician Scholarship recipients\, honoring outstanding student musicians in DeKalb County. "This program captures both the brilliance and the soul of Vienna\," said Smelser. "It's a fitting way to close our season." The concert is sponsored in part by JoAnn Smelser. Support the KSO during Give DeKalb County on May 7\, a 24-hour online giving event benefiting local nonprofits. Mail-in donations begin April 23. Donors may choose to earmark their gifts to support a variety of KSO funds\, including scholarships\, educational outreach\, and other programs that sustain the orchestra's impact in the community. More information and giving options are available at givedekalbcounty.org. Tickets and information are available at kishorchestra.org or at the door.
