Ben Gordon Center is starting off May's Mental Health Awareness Month by inviting you to their Documentary Screening of "Who Cares About Kelsey?" at the DeKalb High School. This documentary focuses mainly on one student, Kelsey, who suffers from ADHD and has gone through homelessness, substance abuse, self-mutilation, and from childhood abuse. She attends a school which has a very high drop out rate, and where students, like Kelsey, are more likely to end up in the juvenile justice system than at graduation. The documentary tries to show the emotional/behavioral challenges of students and tries to show the innovative educational approaches that are helping these students succeed. In this instance, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), a youth-directed planning process, was implemented in Kelsey's school in order to improve the culture and climate. This documentary will be screened at the DeKalb High School on May 7th from 6:00-8:00pm, and will be followed with an after panel discussion. We welcome you, your family, and friends to join us on May 8th. To sign up to attend the presentation, call Michelle LaPage at (815) 757-3488 to R.S.V.P. Attendance is FREE.
